Compare Semrush vs Ahrefs pricing for 2026. Explore true monthly costs, user seat fees, PAYG credit limits, and European VAT rules before buying.

Semrush vs Ahrefs pricing looks close on the sticker: US$139 against US$129 for the entry plan. The bill you actually pay depends on seats, add-ons and how each tool meters usage. Ahrefs has the lower entry price and no cap on verified client sites. Semrush fits teams that want daily tracking and AI visibility in one login. Prices below are in US$ and before VAT.

Choose by workload, not by the cheapest sticker. Here is who each tool suits and who it does not.

  • Semrush suits teams that want rankings refreshed daily, AI visibility tracking and, according to Backlinko's comparison, paid search competitor research in one account.
  • Ahrefs suits specialists who live in backlink data, and agencies with many client sites, because verified projects are unlimited on every plan.
  • Semrush does not suit agencies tracking many client sites on a low tier. SEO and Starter stop at 5 websites, and Pro+ at 15.
  • Ahrefs does not suit solo users who need daily rank updates. Rank Tracker refreshes weekly on every plan, and the plan list shows no PPC research tool.

On entry price, Ahrefs Lite costs US$129 a month (US$108 a month billed annually). Semrush SEO costs US$139 (US$117.33 billed annually). That is according to both official pricing pages, checked October 2026. The full ladder is in the tier section below.

Which tool suits your specific marketing use case

Which tool suits your specific marketing use case
Which tool suits your specific marketing use case

Your team shape decides this more than any feature list. Four common set-ups are below.

  • Solo consultants and freelancers. Ahrefs Lite (US$129) gives you Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer and API access, but only 1,000 credits per user each month. Semrush SEO (US$139) tracks 500 keywords daily across 5 websites. Note that Ahrefs keeps Content Explorer, broken backlinks and linking authors for Standard and above.
  • In-house growth teams. Semrush Starter (US$199) and Pro+ (US$299) combine SEO, AI brand tracking and, from Pro+, content optimisation. If you pay for a separate PPC research tool or social scheduler today, add that bill to the Ahrefs column before you compare totals.
  • Agencies with client domains. Ahrefs Standard (US$249) allows unlimited verified projects. Style Factory's comparison notes you verify a domain through Google Search Console, a DNS record or HTML. Semrush Pro+ caps you at 15 websites.
  • Developers and API builders. Ahrefs includes API and MCP access from Lite, with 200,000 API integration units a month and 100 rows per request. Semrush Starter includes MCP access, while advanced API data integration starts at Advanced, which is custom-priced. For raw data feeds only, DataForSEO runs pay as you go with a US$50 minimum top-up and no subscription.

If neither fits your budget, our Semrush alternatives guide covers other routes.

Both vendors advertise savings of up to 17% when you pay annually. Semrush lists Advanced and Enterprise as custom-priced. Ahrefs adds a US$29 Starter plan for researching searches and competitors, and an Enterprise plan at US$1,499 a month with an annual commitment.

On free access, Semrush offers a Free account with 1 demo project and 10 reports a day, plus a 7-day trial on paid plans. Ahrefs lists no trial. Its free route is Ahrefs Free (Ahrefs Webmaster Tools), which gives verified site owners limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit. The AI allowances differ so much that they get their own section below.

Hidden fees user seats and credit limits

Hidden fees user seats and credit limits

Seats and add-ons are where the two bills drift apart. Ahrefs prices a seat by plan, while Semrush quotes a starting price.

Every Ahrefs plan includes 1 user. Lite lets you add up to 2 more at US$40 a month each, Standard up to 5 at US$60, and Advanced up to 10 at US$80. Semrush lists Additional Users from US$45 a month, with individual logins and shared projects. Ahrefs also says unprepaid extra users are charged automatically on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Reporting is the other swing factor:

  • Semrush Base Report, US$10 a month: data from 20+ tools, Google Analytics and Search Console integrations, scheduling and PDF export.
  • Semrush Pro Report, US$20 a month: adds white-labelling, 20+ external integrations, AI summaries and sharing by link.
  • Ahrefs Report Builder, US$99 a month: 50 reports, 500 widgets and scheduling. The plans already include 5 reports on Lite and Standard, so this add-on raises the ceiling.

Other Ahrefs extras include Content Kit from US$99 a month and Project Boost, covered in the crawl section. Semrush lists flat monthly prices for its add-ons and fixed counts per plan, with no credit packs.

If seat fees are the pain, a single-purpose tool like Alli AI bundles 5 team members into its US$299 Business plan. It automates SEO recommendations rather than replacing research tools, so treat it as a complement.

Calculating the true three user team cost

Picture a three-person agency team: one lead and two collaborators. The table lines up the Ahrefs and Semrush plans that fit that team best.

US$, before VAT.

Add the base price to two seats in each column and you have the monthly bill before reports and VAT. Ahrefs seats cost more per head, so the gap between the two tools shrinks with every person you add, at the listed Semrush starting price. Single-user comparisons hide that.

The ceilings matter as much as the invoice. On Standard, credits are unlimited per user, so a third analyst never hits the 1,000-credit cap that Lite imposes. On reporting, the Semrush Pro Report brings white-labelling and AI summaries, while Report Builder lifts Ahrefs from 5 reports and 30 widgets to 50 and 500. Whichever you choose, price the reporting add-on into the comparison, because it is a bigger line item on Ahrefs.

How Ahrefs and Semrush credit systems work

How Ahrefs and Semrush credit systems work
How Ahrefs and Semrush credit systems work

Ahrefs meters usage with monthly credits and optional pay-as-you-go top-ups, while Semrush lists fixed counts per plan.

Under the Ahrefs FAQ, pay-as-you-go purchases such as report credits, export rows, crawl credits and API units last three billing months, including the current one. If your usage resets on 20 October and you buy credits on 15 October, they expire on 20 December. Prepaid limits are always used first. Lite allows 1,000 credits per user a month, while Standard and Advanced are unlimited.

Export allowances scale with the plan:

  • Lite: 500,000 export rows a month, 2,500 rows per report.
  • Standard: 1.5 million export rows, 30,000 rows per report.
  • Advanced: 4 million export rows, 75,000 rows per report.

Semrush states its limits as counts rather than credit pools. Pro+ lists 1,500 keywords tracked daily and 15 websites, and Starter lists 300 AI visibility reports a day. The Free account allows 10 reports a day.

The practical risk sits with Ahrefs. Charges for extra data only start once you enable pay-as-you-go, so a junior running large batch exports on Lite can raise the invoice quietly. Leave it off for the first month, watch real consumption, then decide.

What you actually get for the money

What you actually get for the money
What you actually get for the money

Ahrefs puts its money into link and research depth, while Semrush spreads it across a wider marketing toolkit.

On the Ahrefs side, Standard adds Content Explorer, Batch Analysis, broken backlinks, broken links and linking authors, and every plan includes SERP history. On the Semrush side, Pro+ adds content optimisation, keyword cannibalisation analysis and multi-location, multi-device tracking. Backlinko also describes a Site Audit that checks more than 140 issues with an AI Search Health score, and PPC competitor analysis.

Historical data follows plan level. Ahrefs gives 6 months on Lite, 2 years on Standard and 5 years on Advanced. Semrush starts historical SEO data at Pro+ (US$299).

For agency visibility, Semrush charges US$90 a month for the Lead Generation add-on, which gives a branded profile on its Agency Partners platform and a verified badge. Ahrefs includes an agency directory listing on Advanced (US$449). That fee is small next to the plan prices, but it matters if client acquisition is a goal.

Cross-channel savings are real only if you use the extras. If your team already pays for separate PPC research or social scheduling, a wider suite can retire those subscriptions. If you do not, you are paying for breadth you will never open.

AI search prompt tracking and database limits

AI search prompt tracking and database limits
AI search prompt tracking and database limits

AI tracking is metered differently: Semrush counts prompts per day, and Ahrefs counts checks per month.

Semrush Starter tracks 50 prompts daily, covers 1 domain for AI brand performance and allows 300 AI visibility reports a day. Pro+ raises prompts to 100 daily. Backlinko describes the toolkit as covering ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Perplexity, with daily updates for tracked prompts.

Ahrefs Brand Radar comes inside the plans, with allowances that run out sooner:

  • Lite: 150 checks a month, 5 prompts.
  • Standard: 300 checks, 10 prompts.
  • Advanced: 600 checks, 20 prompts.

One check means one prompt, on one platform, in one location. Adding platforms or markets therefore drains the pool quickly. Brand Radar also lets you research any brand across 493 million+ organic prompts, which is the benchmarking side of the product. Standalone Brand Radar starts at US$199 a month.

If you only need your own prompts, Ahrefs sells packages:

PackagePrice per monthChecks includedOverage per check
BasicUS$502,500US$0.020
GrowthUS$1007,000US$0.015
ScaleUS$25025,000US$0.010

Overage is billed at the end of the billing month.

Position tracking and site crawl quotas compared

Semrush refreshes rankings daily and Ahrefs weekly, and the two crawl in different ways.

Semrush tracks 500 keywords daily on SEO and Starter and 1,500 on Pro+. Ahrefs tracks more keywords per plan (750 on Lite, 2,000 on Standard, 5,000 on Advanced) but updates them weekly. If you report to clients on short cycles, that cadence gap can matter more than the keyword count.

On audits, Ahrefs offers 100,000 crawl credits a month on Lite, 500,000 on Standard and 1.5 million on Advanced. Each project is capped at 25,000, 50,000 and 250,000 pages respectively. Always-on audit is a plan feature. Project Boost Pro adds IndexNow auto-submission and instant recrawl for US$20 a month per project, and Boost Max costs US$200 per project. Because they bill per project, those fees grow with every client site you switch on.

Project limits shape the invoice too. Ahrefs allows unlimited verified projects, with unverified slots at 5 on Lite and 20 on Standard. Semrush caps websites at 5 on SEO and Starter, 15 on Pro+ and 40 on Advanced.

European compliance data location and reverse VAT

European compliance data location and reverse VAT
European compliance data location and reverse VAT

Ahrefs states EU data centres, while the Semrush legal pages used here name no storage location. If EU-only storage is a hard requirement for you, that difference decides it.

Ahrefs lists its company base as Singapore and the Netherlands, with its primary EU crawler infrastructure and data centres in Amsterdam, according to its privacy policy. Semrush Inc. is a Delaware corporation based in Boston, USA, according to its terms of service.

On data protection, Semrush offers a data processing agreement in which it acts as processor. It includes the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (Decision 2021/914) and the UK transfer mechanism, and Czech law governs the Clauses. Ahrefs describes a GDPR compliance framework with Standard Contractual Clauses and a DPA, per its terms.

On VAT, both pricing pages show net US$ prices, so everything in this article is before VAT. The invoicing entity affects how VAT is treated, so your finance team should map that to your VAT registration before you buy.

Frequently asked questions about tool pricing

Quick answers on Semrush vs Ahrefs pricing questions buyers raise most.

Can you pay in euros or pounds?

Both pricing pages list US$ amounts, so budget in dollars. Ahrefs accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and UnionPay.

Does Ahrefs run discounts or Black Friday deals?

Ahrefs says it never runs discounts. The only saving is up to 17% on annual billing, and Semrush advertises the same ceiling. For other tools, see our Black Friday deals page.

What happens if you exceed Ahrefs limits?

If pay-as-you-go is enabled, Ahrefs bills automatically when consumption passes your plan limits. Extra units last three billing months, and prepaid limits are used first.

What are the cancellation and refund terms?

Ahrefs has no contracts or setup fees. You can cancel any time and keep access until the period ends, after which you move to Ahrefs Free. Refunds are not issued in general, and a monthly subscriber who has not used the service may request one, but Ahrefs can decline if there is material activity. Semrush offers a 7-day free trial that you can cancel at any time.

Can you buy a single tool on its own?

Yes, for Ahrefs: Brand Radar is available standalone from US$199 a month and includes an Ahrefs Free account. Semrush lists users, reports and Lead Generation as add-ons that sit on top of a plan.

Which one wins your budget

Solo consultants chasing backlinks and unlimited client sites should lean Ahrefs. In-house teams that want daily rank checks, AI visibility and PPC research in one login fit Semrush better. Agencies juggling many domains still come out ahead on Ahrefs, seat fees and all.

Whichever side you lean, cost your real team size before deciding: check the three-user cost breakdown and compare it against your current tool stack, then pick the plan that matches your workload, not the sticker price.
